Diesel cost for a DIY truck move
The EIA publishes a US on-highway diesel price every week. Multiply it by your miles and a rental truck's real mpg and you have the fuel line. It is not the move, and it is not how a carrier prices one.

This week’s US on-highway diesel
$6.00 / gallon
Week of . EIA weekly US on-highway diesel via FRED GASDESW. Official series. Live pull failed; this is our last committed snapshot.
About $630 in diesel for 900 miles
113 gallons at 8 mpg. $1 per mile in fuel alone. Rental-class diesel box truck. Loaded, hilly, or towing runs lower.
Fuel is not the move. Add the rental, mileage fee, insurance, tolls, a hotel, and your own back. For a crew move, a carrier prices line-haul by weight or cube and adds a fuel surcharge index, not this number.
What this number is not
A carrier does not price your move as diesel times miles. Line-haul is weight or cube on a tariff, and a fuel surcharge rides on top as a percentage tied to the same weekly EIA series. Read the fuel surcharge guide before you argue about the line on an estimate.
For a DIY move, this is the one line people forget when they compare a $1,200 rental against a $4,000 crew. Add the rental, the mileage fee, the damage waiver, tolls, a hotel, and a Sunday.
