Mpg from each brand's own truck page (low end, loaded). Fuel: US EIA weekly retail, week of 28 Sept 2026; US average.
How the number is built
Miles come from OpenStreetMap road routing between the two cities. Each truck uses the low end of its brand's own mpg figure, because a loaded truck does worse than the brochure. Half the miles are priced at the start and half at the finish, using the narrowest area the EIA publishes for each: the city, else the state, else the region. U-Haul trucks run on gasoline; Penske's 22 and 26 ft and Budget's 26 ft run on diesel. See this week's prices by region.
What it is not
It is the fuel line of a DIY move, not the move. Add the rental, mileage on an in-town rental, coverage, equipment and nights on the road; the rental costs page lists each brand's terms. A mover does not price your move this way: line-haul is weight and miles on a tariff, and a fuel surcharge may ride on top. Read the fuel surcharge guide before you argue about that line on an estimate.
