High fives to the guys for figuring out how to both take apart and put back together my day bed. Every step of this experience was fantastic. Worth the money. And frankly, I've never done it myself for much less than what I paid.

   On July 31, 2026 I called Mid American Moving (MAM) for a moving quote from Johnston, IA to Riverside, California telling them we needed it delivered on August 14 in Riverside. They sent* us a quote of 300cf ($1898). The representative we talked to said they would have to pick items up the following week to have delivery on August 14. We left for a long weekend and had no service and called them again on August 4, 2026 to ask a few more questions. At this time they gave us the same quote but said they would need to get an inventory list from us to get a true quote amount. We were told we had to pay a $450 reservation deposit (which we did) and that they would have to pick our items up on August 7, 2026 or August 8,2026 in order to get our items to Riverside by August 14. I was told someone would contact me that day to get our inventory list for our final quote. No one called us. On August 6, 2026 it was late afternoon when I called MAM and asked for who was doing our inventory and final quote since our items were supposed to be picked up the next day or day after. I was finally given an email to send info to and I sent a video of our storage unit and everything that would be going in the moving truck. I was sent a new estimate of 504 cf ($2856). On August 7, 2026 MAM sent a moving truck to pick up our items in Johnston. There was already one load in the truck. As they started wrapping our items they said there was more than 500 cf of items there and that they could not load our items until we signed a new estimate and paid $1200. The new estimate said it was 740cf ($5049.48) before anything was even loaded on the truck. We then found out we were being charged for things like $70 for a box for a lamp (which we ended up taking in our own vehicle instead), $50 to wrap a large and small cat tree in plastic, and $50 to put cardboard on the glass doors of a hutch. All of those extra charges we had supplies for and could have done for free if we had known about such charges ahead of time. We discussed our concerns with the crew about how our items were going to be loaded and how we could go from a 504cf estimate with video footage of everything being loaded to 740cf. I took a picture of the truck with the previous load in it and before they loaded any of our items. The crew told us how they measure the amount of space that the loads take up and that in between each set of “bars” on the side of the truck is 100cf. They loaded our items and I took a picture of the side to show how much “space” our items had taken up. The crew and us both agreed it was about 550cf. I asked them if they would be letting the office know the actual amount of space our items took up and they said no, we would have to contact the company. I sent an email to MAM replying to a quote and asked them when we would be seeing a corrected estimate since our load did not come to the 740cf they said it would. On August 8, 2026 I was given a response of “please contact customer service at 816-425-0053 to help you with this. (We actually didn’t see this email until Tuesday, August 11) On August 11, 2026 I called the 816-425-0053 number to find out when we would see our new quote and was told we would get a new quote once it was loaded onto another truck. I asked why we needed a new quote then when we and the crew already know how much cf our items took up and she didn’t give me an answer. On August 13, 2026 I called wanting to know what time the deliver truck would be arriving the next day and was told that it would not be. I was told that our items were in storage and would be 7-14 days before they would arrive because they needed more loads to take out this way. None of that was told to us before we went with this company. We were told it would be picked up on the 7th/8th and delivered on the 14th/15th. I was bounced around to several different departments and numbers. I told MAM that I wanted to speak to a manager or owner immediately, that we had been lied to. I was told that my request was in “escalation” and I would get a call back. It is now August 16, 2026 and have yet to hear from anyone in authority with this company for getting our things out here.

    Bait-and-Switch: Unlawful 82% Price Increase After Loading

    TLDR: 1. Do not use Mid-American Moving. 2. If you already hired them, read your contract line by line before signing anything. 3. If they overcharge you or hold your items, immediately report them to the FMCSA National Consumer Complaint Database. 4. Don't trust all the 5 star reviews, they can be fake/bought Avoid Mid-American Moving (USDOT: 3181246, MC: 126479) at all costs. They engage in a textbook illegal moving scam: loading your entire life onto a truck and then demanding thousands of dollars more than your binding contract. A month before my interstate move from Iowa to North Dakota, I paid a $450 deposit. Three days before loading, I completed a thorough inventory review with them to ensure total accuracy. They issued me a binding not-to-exceed estimate of $2,825.00 for 521 cubic feet of stuff. On loading day (June 28), the crew completely loaded my household goods onto the truck. They did not mention that our things would exceed the cubic feet listed on the moving estimate and did not send a revised estimate before loading. After loading, I paid the agreed-upon $1,187 (half of the remaining valid balance). However, the next evening (June 29), the company emailed a Bill of Lading (BOL) unilaterally inflating my volume from 521 to 778 cubic feet, driving the total price up to $5,153.56. They explicitly stated that if I did not sign and pay an immediate extra $946.78, my shipment would be withheld. Fearing they would hold my items hostage and hit me with unauthorized storage fees, I was forced to sign their non-compliant contract under duress. My wife, our 2-year-old son, and I were stranded in a new state with nothing, forced to sleep in sleeping bags on the floor for 5 days while waiting for our delivery. When I demanded the physical inventory document to verify how they magically added 250+ cubic feet, they promised to send it but never did. To make matters worse, when the truck arrived on July 5, my items were packed into a ~1,600-cubic-foot truck shared with two other families. My belongings took up roughly a third of the space (~533 cubic feet), proving they outright fabricated the 778 cubic feet metric to extract an extra $2,328.56 from my family. Under federal regulation 49 CFR § 375.403, a mover is strictly prohibited from altering a binding estimate after a shipment is loaded. They broke federal law, violated their own contract terms, fabricated measurements, and used extortion tactics to force a signature. According to USDOT records, they only own/lease 1 truck tractor and 1 trailer (For comparison, an established carrier like Allied Van Lines operates thousands of vehicles). They rely on rental trucks to move our lives. My items were picked up in an unlabeled truck and delivered in a rented Penske truck. They also only operate with 4 certified CDL drivers. Meaning they could take a long time to deliver your items during peak moving seasons. The only, ONLY plus about this company is the movers themselves. Brant and team picked up our things and unloaded everything professionally and were easy to work with. Unfortunately, they are only being paid pennies. I have filed a formal complaint with FMCSA. Save your family from the absolute nightmare, financial stress, and illegal extortion. Hire a reputable, honest moving company. Mid-American Moving cannot be trusted. Please do not trust all the 5-star reviews, as they can be bought or fabricated.
