How long a move takes: loading hours and delivery spreads
A local move is priced in crew hours and usually finishes the same day. A long-distance move is priced by weight or cube and delivered inside a spread of days written on the bill of lading. The spread, not the pickup date, is the promise. Ask for it before you sign.

Local: hours, not days
A local crew charges by the hour with a minimum. The estimate should say the crew size, the truck, and the hours they expect. A sofa that will not turn on the stair is two people and ten minutes per flight. Packing on the day adds hours nobody quoted.
Ask what the hourly rate covers, whether the clock starts at the yard or at your door, and what the travel fee is.
Long distance: the spread
Most interstate moves share a trailer. Your goods leave when the truck is full and arrive inside a spread of days. The spread is written on the bill of lading as the delivery window, and reasonable dispatch is the rule that applies to it. A dedicated truck shortens the spread and costs more.
If the window is not on the paper, you cannot hold anyone to it. Get it before pickup, and ask what the mover pays if they miss it.
International: the container and the form
Sea freight is weeks, and the customs form is the part that stalls it. Apply for the destination relief before the container sails and the timeline holds. Ship first and apply later and the container waits at the port by the day.

Interstate movers must give the booklet and a written estimate after a survey or a full description. A $499 ad is not an estimate.

Ask out loud
- Can a local move take more than a day?
- A large house with packing, or a two-stop move with storage between, can. Ask the estimator to say so on paper rather than finding out at 6pm.
- Why did the mover give me a two-week delivery window?
- Shared trailer, long lane, or peak season. It is normal. What is not normal is a window nobody wrote down.
