USDOT and MC numbers: what each one proves
A USDOT number says a company is registered with the federal safety system. An MC number says it holds operating authority for hire. Neither one says it may carry household goods across state lines; that is a specific authority you check on the SAFER snapshot. Registered is not the same as authorized.

Why you are here
The website shows a USDOT number in the footer and people stop reading. The number can belong to a two-truck freight outfit, a broker with no trucks, or a carrier whose authority was revoked last spring.

Read three lines on SAFER
Operating status: authorized for hire, or not authorized. A company can hold a USDOT and be out of authority.
Cargo carried: look for household goods. A general freight carrier with no household-goods line is not the mover the ad describes.
Entity type: carrier, broker, or both. A broker takes your deposit and hands the job to a carrier you have not met. Ask for the carrier's USDOT before the truck is booked.
What our lookup does
The tool queries the FMCSA Company Census on data.transportation.gov and prints legal name, DBA, city, USDOT, MC, operating class, and whether household goods is in the cargo list. If the API fails we say so and send you to SAFER instead of inventing a row.
Complaint counts and safety ratings live on the FMCSA side. We link out; we do not mint a safety score of our own.
In-state moves
A move that never leaves the state does not need federal household-goods authority. Many states run their own desk with their own number. The state desk pages list who that is and what to ask for.

Ask out loud
- The mover has a USDOT number. Is that enough?
- No. Check the SAFER snapshot for active for-hire authority and household goods in the cargo list. A USDOT alone is a registration, not a licence to move you.
- What if the number on the truck differs from the estimate?
- Ask who owns the shipment. A different USDOT on the day usually means a broker sold the job or the carrier subcontracted it. Get the actual carrier's numbers in writing before loading.
