   Timing, wrapping attitude

   I booked Local Muscle Movers for a move of eight smallish items of furniture (bed frame, queen mattress, loveseats, chest of drawers etc) and about thirty-five prepacked boxes of different sizes from midcoast Maine to NYC. This was organized about four months in advance (as it turned out the move had to be rescheduled for weather and house closing issues) and I spoke to three different people and received a quote of over $6,500. This seemed quite large for a two day move for three men but I was assured that having given extensive details that it would all go smoothly on the days involved and given that I am an older woman on my own with three pets then I needed help. On both days, the team showed up more than an hour late with no notification whatsover. On the first day, this meant that someone was waiting in Maine for them for over 72 minutes despite the fact that they had called the day before to make sure that we had snow plowed. They came unprepared to pack the items listed and had no mattress cover and limited furniture packing materials (and failed to secure those items that were wrapped so there were multiple minor damages). On the following day in NYC, they arrived late, the driver had a meltdown and I could reach no one in the office for several hours to address my concerns. The unloading in NYC was always going to be a challenge but to arrive without food, with a nervous team, with someone who could barely climb a staircase without breaking a sweat and to leave items to get dirty on the street and so on. Dylan referred to me as "she" multiple times throughout the day which was ageist and demeaning given that the team knew my name but was a clear indication of how I was being treated despite the fact that I threw no surprises and they were the ones who were disorganized, disrespectful and damaged my possessions with a failure of preparation. I gave ample opportunity for someone to address my concerns after the move also but heard nothing and just paid the bill in full despite the fact that this was not a concierge move but something that resembled a uhaul version for $2-3,000 and not the amount charged. It created a huge amount of stress and given that I had tried to prepare then it was also deeply disappointing. They moved me well two years before in Maine but are not prepared for more sophisticated and complicated moves and should neither be engaging in them nor charging these prices.
