Moving in Ontario: Movers, Rules and Costs
In Ontario a mover cannot charge more than 10% above the estimate in your contract, and holding your goods for more money is an unfair practice. Canada has no federal mover licence; check the carrier's CVOR and a name that matches the truck.

What to know before the deposit
Ontario is the one province with a written mover rule: a mover cannot charge more than 10% above the estimate in your contract unless you agree to extra supplies or services, and holding your goods to renegotiate the contract is an unfair practice under the Consumer Protection Act. A moving contract over $50 must be in writing. If you pay an extra fee to get your things back, write "paid under protest" on the invoice and keep a copy.
A move that crosses into another province or the US follows the contract and the rules where the company is based. Ask, in writing, which company holds your goods on the road and what it pays per pound or per item if something breaks.

Questions people ask
- Do movers need a licence in Ontario?
- Canada has no federal mover licence, and we found no provincial one in Ontario. A commercial carrier based here holds a CVOR (Commercial Vehicle Operator's Registration), which is a trucking safety credential, not a mover licence. Ask for it, and check that the legal name matches the truck.
- Where do I complain about a mover in Ontario?
- Consumer Protection Ontario. Keep the contract, the invoice, and every written message. A card payment can also be disputed with your issuer.
- What does a move within Ontario cost?
- Reviewers reported a median of C$1,300 for moves that stayed inside Ontario, across 914 priced reviews. A reported price is what one household paid, not a quote.
