How to pay movers: the deposit, the balance at delivery, and which payment method still protects you after the truck leaves
116 reviews since 21 Sept 2026 that mention cash only, a wire, Zelle, Venmo, Cash App, a cashier's check, or a card sit at a mean of 1.30, and 92.2% of them are one or two stars. How you pay is the last protection you keep after the truck leaves: a card keeps a Fair Credit Billing Act dispute alive, and cash, a wire, or an app ends it when the money moves.

The three payments in a move
If the method is blank, you are negotiating it at the worst moment.
The deposit comes first, and the paper has to name the method. September 2026 rate cards treat 0 to 25 percent by card as standard, and a demand near 50 percent, or cash only, as the warning. Read it against the moving company deposit guide. A long-distance move should say if the deposit is refundable, by card or by check. If the method is blank, you are negotiating it at the worst moment.
The balance is the second payment, and extras are the third. September 2026 rate cards put an interstate balance at delivery and let the mover hold goods until the lawful amount is paid. That split is deposit versus cash on delivery: the deposit holds the date, and the balance releases the load. Put stairs and shuttles on the estimate. The bill of lading should match that estimate before anyone asks for the rest.
The payment line belongs on the estimate, beside the weight and the dates. A mover who will not write card or check next to the balance is leaving the method free to change. Run the figure through the COD checker before you trust a total that exists only in a text. We are not a carrier. A blank payment line usually predicts the rest of the job.
Card, check, cash, wire, app
A wire, Zelle, Venmo, or Cash App is gone the moment it clears.
A card keeps a dispute alive after the truck leaves, and a personal check leaves a bank trail. The Fair Credit Billing Act lets you dispute a card charge for services that were not delivered. The right follows that charge, and it ends if you convert the bill to cash. A personal check can still be traced. A cashier's check is nearly finished once handed over, so buy it before the curb.
A wire, Zelle, Venmo, or Cash App is gone the moment it clears. September 2026 rate cards say that without softness. There is no Fair Credit Billing Act dispute on an app, and no chargeback on a wire to a personal account. Reviews that paid this way have nothing left to recover. If the name on the request differs from the estimate, stop. That mismatch is high on the moving contract red flags list.
Cash ends the paper trail, which is why the [moving scams](/guides/moving-scams) file keeps meeting it. Cash can be fine when the legal name is on a receipt and the amount matches the estimate. It is a dead end when the only record is a text that says paid. Photograph the receipt before the truck moves. If they will not write one, you already know how this job intends to be remembered.
What the reviews say
The recurring story on this desk is a balance quoted by card and demanded in cash at the curb.
Payment mentions in this file are a hard set. Since 21 Sept 2026, 116 reviews across 94 movers mention cash only, a wire, Zelle, Venmo, Cash App, a cashier's check, or a card. The mean rating is 1.30, set against 3.95 across 5,220 reviews. 92.2% are one or two stars, and 56% mention damage. Median price typed: $4,000. Prices are the whole move as typed, self-reported, skewed to long-distance jobs and to people with something to say.
The recurring story on this desk is a balance quoted by card and demanded in cash at the curb. The ramp is up and the phone is off. It shows up weekly in the US reviews: the estimate said card, the driver wants cash, and the boxes stay aboard. Read what to do when goods are held before you are counting bills in the driveway.
A payment fight and a price fight are often the same review. Over-quote language appears in 4.8% of priced reviews since 2025, at a median of $4,965. Interstate medians are $4,500 for 2025 and $4,530 for 2026 to date. Fuel is the EIA weekly price for the week of this week, enough for a fuel line on a rate card. Settle a door price before you debate how to pay it.
The balance at delivery
A cashier's check at delivery still needs a receipt in the mover's legal name.
On an interstate move the balance is due when the truck arrives. On a non-binding estimate the 110 percent rule caps what you pay before they unload, and the rest is billed later. Use the 110 percent rule guide before the street is blocked. September 2026 rate cards allow a hold only until the lawful amount is paid. If the crew will not unload at that figure, file a complaint the same day.
A cashier's check at delivery still needs a receipt in the mover's legal name. Make it payable to the company on the estimate, not the driver and not a first name. Ask for the receipt before the check leaves your hand, with the amount, the date, and an inventory reference. Keep a photo. A promise to email proof after the truck leaves is how these reviews lose the only record they had.
Pay the lawful balance, then watch the unload. Local jobs often settle by card at the end of the day. Interstate jobs often want the money before the last box comes off. Either is tolerable when it matches the estimate. A switch to cash, a wire, or an app at that hour is a story this desk already has. If the driver rewrites the rules out loud, open the FMCSA trust notes on your phone.
The cash discount
The cash discount is real, and it is also how the bad ones get paid.
The cash discount is real, and it is also how the bad ones get paid. A modest cut can be the processor fee a company would rather skip. Take it only when the legal name is on the receipt and the truck matches the licence record. Use the licence lookup and match the USDOT and MC numbers to the truck outside. A crew that shows neither wants to be untraceable.
Write the cash price on the estimate the day before, beside the card price, under the legal name. You should get to choose. The receipt should match that cash price. A discount that exists only while the ramp is in the air is a magic trick, and you are the audience. If they will not write the cash price before the truck rolls, pay by card.
Before the deposit leaves
Then you call, and you read the payment line back.
Run five checks before the deposit leaves. First, the legal name matches the licence lookup. Second, the USDOT and MC numbers match that name. Third, the deposit and the balance are written as a card or a check to that legal name. Fourth, the deposit terms follow the deposit guide, including what is refundable. Fifth, the balance is due at delivery on the written estimate, not on a text you have not seen.
Then you call, and you read the payment line back. Ask which name will appear on the card charge, whether the balance can stay on that card, and what they do if the bill exceeds the estimate. Write down who answered and the time. A shrug, or a wire to a personal account, ends the call. Keep the contract red flags list beside you while you can still hang up.
Send the deposit only when the checks and the call agree. A card to the legal name is the ordinary case on September 2026 rate cards. Cash, a wire, or an app at booking is the pattern the reviews already closed. Compare the company with the US review file and the mover list the same afternoon. Once the money moves by a method you cannot dispute, you are writing someone else's story.

Ask out loud
Questions people ask
- Should I pay movers with a card?
- Pay by card when the estimate allows it. The Fair Credit Billing Act lets you dispute a charge for services that were not delivered. Cash, a wire, Zelle, Venmo, and Cash App close that route when the money moves. If you pay cash anyway, get a receipt in the mover's legal name before the truck leaves.
- Is a cash-only mover a red flag?
- Yes. September 2026 rate cards treat cash only, and a deposit demand near 50 percent, as the warning. Reviews since 21 Sept 2026 that mention these methods, 116 of them across 94 movers, sit at a mean of 1.30, and 92.2% are one or two stars.
- When do I pay the balance to movers?
- On an interstate move the balance is due at delivery. On a non-binding estimate the 110 percent rule caps what you must pay to unload, and the remainder is billed after. Local jobs are often paid by card at the end. Use the method already written on the estimate.
- Should I take a cash discount from a mover?
- Take it when the card price and the cash price were both on the estimate, the receipt uses the legal name, and the truck matches the licence record. A discount that appears at the curb, in exchange for dropping the card, is how weak operators get paid.
- What if movers demand cash at the curb?
- This desk sees it every week: a card quote, then cash, with the ramp up and the phone off. Tender the lawful amount by the written method. If they hold the goods past that, use the hostage-goods steps and file a complaint. Leave Zelle and wires out of the standoff.
- Do movers require a cashier's check?
- Many long-distance crews ask for one at delivery. It can be legitimate when it is payable to the company on the estimate and you receive a receipt first. A check made out to the driver is as final as cash. Photograph the receipt before the truck pulls away.
