Before you book
If the estimate is a handshake and a smile, it is not an estimate yet.
License and the estimate type. Interstate household moves need a mover with an active USDOT number and FMCSA household goods authority. Check that pair with the license lookup before money changes hands. Ask for a binding or not-to-exceed estimate, and read how an estimate is built so weight and miles sit on the page in plain numbers.
Payment, window, deposit. On a non-binding estimate the mover must deliver on payment of 110 percent of the estimate. Read the 110 percent rule before you argue with a revised bill. Get the delivery window in writing on the order for service. If the estimate is a handshake and a smile, it is not an estimate yet. Deposit terms belong in that same packet; the deposit guide lists what to pin down before funds move.
