Who makes this move
New York sits at 107.9 and North Carolina at 94.3.
Census counts both directions. ACS 2024 puts 17,978 people moving from New York to North Carolina, with a margin of plus or minus 3,464. The reverse flow is smaller: 10,076 people moved from North Carolina to New York in the same year. Those are person counts from the Census, not bookings with one mover.
Price levels differ at each end. BEA price parity for 2024 sets the United States at 100. New York sits at 107.9 and North Carolina at 94.3. A lower index means the same basket costs less after you arrive. The index does not say why a household moved.
Both states tax wages. New York taxes wages, and North Carolina taxes wages. This page does not quote rates, brackets, or filing deadlines. Check the state tax agency if you need a withholding figure. Income tax is a separate bill from the move, which is priced by weight and miles.
What the job looks like
In our file the most common trip is New York to Raleigh, 488 miles, about 10 hours of driving.
The common run is a long drive. In our file the most common trip is New York to Raleigh, 488 miles, about 10 hours of driving. That figure is wheel time, not the full job. Pickup, a weight ticket, and the delivery window on the order all sit around that drive. Book it as a long distance move, since the order covers more than the drive.
Price follows weight and miles. Long distance goods are priced by weight and miles, so two homes on this run can land far apart. Across 45 priced reviews the median is $3,877, and the middle half runs from $2,972 to $8,000. Those 45 reviews mix home sizes and distances. Use reading a moving estimate when you compare a quote to that range.
Damage and delay show up often. Of 45 reviews in our file for this run, 49% mention damage and 38% mention a delay or a no-show. The notes do not grade how bad the damage was, only that someone reported it. Put the delivery window on the order, and photograph goods at pickup and at delivery.
Before you book
Delivery is a window set on the order for service, not a single clock time.
Check the license before the quote. Interstate household moves need a mover with an active USDOT number and FMCSA household goods authority. Look the number up yourself, and match the legal name on the estimate to the record. A license lookup is the check. Haulest does not haul the goods.
Pin the price type in writing. Ask if the estimate is binding or not-to-exceed. On a non-binding estimate the mover must deliver on payment of 110 percent of the estimate. That is the 110 percent rule. A binding figure is the price on the order, and any change should be written before the truck leaves.
Write the window and the deposit. Delivery is a window set on the order for service, not a single clock time. Get that window in writing before pickup. Deposit terms should say how much is due, when it is due, and what a cancellation changes. If those lines are missing, the quote is not finished.
